How to Move in a Milwaukee Winter Without the Headache

Greenway Moving & Junk Removal · 5 min read

Snow, ice and early sunsets make winter moves trickier, but they’re very doable with a little prep. Here’s how to keep your move on schedule and your stuff (and floors) in one piece.

Why people move in winter anyway

Winter is the slow season for most movers, which usually means more open dates and more flexibility on scheduling. If your lease ends in January or you found the right house in February, you don’t have to wait for spring.

Before moving day

  • Book early in the day. It gets dark early, and loading in daylight is safer and faster.
  • Clear a path. Shovel and salt sidewalks, steps and the driveway at both homes the night before and again that morning.
  • Save a parking spot. Keep the space closest to the door clear so the truck isn’t hauling across a snowbank.
  • Turn the utilities on at the new place. Heat and lights should be running before the first box shows up.
  • Watch the forecast. If a big storm is coming, talk to your movers early about a backup day.

Protect your stuff from the cold

Some things don’t love freezing temperatures. Pack these carefully, and consider riding with them in your heated car instead of the truck:

  • Electronics, TVs and computers. Let them warm up to room temperature before plugging them in.
  • Houseplants, which can be damaged by even a short time in the cold.
  • Liquids that can freeze and leak, like cleaning supplies, paint and drinks.
  • Instruments, photos and anything with glue or veneer that can crack.

Protect your floors

Wet boots and salt are the biggest winter mess. Lay down floor runners, cardboard or old rugs at every entrance, and keep a few towels by the door. A good moving crew will bring floor protection, but it never hurts to have extra.

Quick tip

Pack a “first night” box with a space heater, blankets, a kettle, phone chargers, toilet paper and snacks. Label it and keep it with you.

On moving day

  • Keep the door closed between trips when you can to hold in the heat.
  • Have hot coffee or water ready. Your crew (and your family) will thank you.
  • Do a last walkthrough before the truck leaves, including closets, the basement and the garage.
